Obligatory Introduction Post/The State of SEGA

Can SEGA rest on their laurels at this point?

Hi everyone! These introductions are always awkward, so I’m going to do my best to make it quick and painless. My name’s Christian, I usually go by NiGHTSfan on the internet. Don’t think I have to explain that moniker to you guys.  A little background information about me, I’m 19, living in Birmingham, Alabama at the moment, (right by that tornado business, we got lucky…) I’m a pianist/producer/musician in general. That being said, expect a lot of music-related stuff from me. ;D I’m also a film buff, a big political nut, and a recovering gaming addict. I mostly play for nostalgia now. Also, Minecraft kicks all kinds of ass. As for my familiarity with SEGA, my first console was a SEGA Pico, (if you can call that a console. If you can’t, then Game Gear.) and I’ve been a big Sonic/SEGA fan since. NiGHTS has always been my favorite, but SEGA in general really just stands out to me as a company with more innovation, originality and interesting IPs.

Remember this?

Anyway, thought I’d start out my posting on SEGA Media with a little retrospective on SEGA’s position within the industry now, and what they stand to gain and/or lose in the coming months.  Obviously SEGA has won a few fan points with the unveiling of Sonic Generations, but what about their other ongoing projects?  We’ve seen a lot of press about licensed titles such as Thor and Captain America, but what have we heard on Aliens: Colonial Marines lately? It seems like the company is pushing their “sure bet” IPs more heavily than the fan-favorites. From a business perspective, that’s completely understandable. I don’t know if it’s going to carry much weight with their fanbase though. It seems like the more we shout “SHENMUE 3″ the more they wink at us and put out Super Monkey Ball ports.

And their lack of interest in classic IP’s isn’t the only thing. The removal of the Streets of Rage Remake lost SEGA a lot of points with the gaming community at large. After all, they KNEW about this years ago, and it took them 8 years to get along to taking action about it? AND they released SoR2 and 3 within the next month? That’s just downright insulting. All the while, licensed games are getting more and more promotion, and Yakuza 12 is being pushed like it’s the next Halo. While I’m glad to see SEGA making profits, it’s kind of disheartening to see this disconnect between them and their fanbase. I mean, other than Sonic and that laughable NiGHTS game, when was the last time a classic SEGA IP got a new release that didn’t just rehash the first level with new graphics? It really seems, with Sonic Generations, like SEGA is just saying “You guys like classic Sonic right THAT MEANS GREEN HILL ZONE” when in actuality it boils down to a lot more than that.  All that being said, I’m still going to buy Generations, and probably Virtua Tennis 4. I suppose it’s a bit of a hypocrisy to complain about this kind of thing and still buy into it, but what can you do? Anyway, let me know what you think, and if this kind of editorial style sits well with you guys.

ZOMBIES. JAPANESE. I LOVE SEGA SO THIS IS COOL

If not, I can just gawk over JAPANESE ZOMBIES OMGZ.
